Insurance

Getting insurance as a self-employed carer

Which cover you need, roughly what it costs and what to ask insurers.

Types of cover

Public liability: covers injury or damage to clients or their property.

Professional indemnity / treatment risk: covers claims arising from the care you provide, including medication support.

Personal accident or income protection: optional, but helps if you cannot work.

What to ask an insurer

Does it cover personal care, medication administration and live-in work?

Does it cover me when working for care homes or agencies on a self-employed basis?

What is the level of cover (£1m–£5m is typical) and is there an excess?

Where to look

Specialist care-sector insurers and brokers offer policies for independent carers. Compare at least three quotes and keep your certificate to hand — clients will ask.

General information only — rates and rules change. Check GOV.UK or speak to an accountant for your situation.
