Managing self-employment
Running your care business day to day
Invoicing, record keeping, setting rates and protecting your wellbeing.
Invoicing and records
Send clear invoices showing dates, hours, rate and your payment details. Agree payment terms (e.g. 7 or 14 days) before you start.
Use a separate bank account for your care work — it makes your tax return much easier.
Setting your rate
Remember you have no holiday pay, sick pay or employer pension. Build these into your hourly or daily rate.
Live-in and emergency work usually command a higher rate.
Looking after yourself
Plan breaks between placements, especially after live-in or respite work. Keep your own support network and know where to turn for advice.
General information only — rates and rules change. Check GOV.UK or speak to an accountant for your situation.
